How Solar Could Help Low-Income Families

Although price has long been a primary concern for homeowners, solar energy still has the potential to change the lives of low-income families throughout Florida. Not only is the cost of solar energy equipment shrinking, but the economic and environmental benefits of collecting solar have also proven to exceed the initial installation costs.

For one, the push for clean energy through the Clean Power Plan has inspired several new projects throughout Florida that are bringing about new jobs at high pay. Duke Energy announced that it would be building a new clean energy plant, and many neighborhood projects have cropped up with a need for extra building hands. Ultimately, these new jobs allow workers of every skill level the opportunity to put their abilities to good use for good pay, and that’s good for everybody.

Another important point about solar is that it cuts down the dependency on costly fuels. The rates of gas and fuel have been up and down, but rarely turn out to be affordable. Solar energy kicks out the middle man and allows homeowners to collect their own energy, avoiding the utility company’s ever-changing rates. In the end, low-income households often need to pinch pennies in order to get by, and solar can help cut out one of the most expensive monthly costs for homeowners.

By making a significant shift to solar, Florida also begins to limit air pollution, something that is thought to be contributing to climate change and increased water levels. If these water levels rise too drastically, they may soon begin to affect low-lying areas where some families may not be able to rebuild. However, by cutting back on our pollution contribution as a state, we can take the first steps toward slowing the progress of climate change.

No matter the reason, taking solar energy seriously could truly change the Sunshine State for good. It’s time to start thinking about all the benefits of clean energy.
